| One important cause of the generation gap is the opportunity that young people have to choose their own life-styles. |
在传统社会中,当孩子长大后,他们被期望与父母生活在同一地区,嫁给父母认识和认可的人,并经常继续家庭职业 | In traditional societies, when children grow up, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to marry people that their parents know and approve of, and often to continue the family occupation. |
| In our society, however, young people often travel great distances for their education. |
早年搬出家门,与父母从未见过的人结婚或同居,选择与父母不同的职业 | move out of the family home at early age, marry or live with people whom their parents have never met, and choose occupations different from those of their parents |
In our upwardly mobile society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did: |
| to find better jobs, to make more money, and to do all the things that they were unable to do. |
| Often, however, the ambitions that parents have for their children are another cause of the division between them. |
| Often, they discover that they have very little in comon with each other. |
| Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is another cause of the generation gap. |
| In a traditional culture, elderly people are valued for their wisdom, but in our society the knowledge of a lifetime may become obsolete overnight. |
| The young and the old seem to live in two very diffenent worlds, separated by different skills and abilities. |
代沟在未来一段时间内将继续成为美国人生活的一个特点 | no doubt. the generation gap will continue to be a feature of American life for some time to come |

Dear editor
I am a faithful reader of your newspaper and always appreciate your active reporting of social problems. Therefore, I beleve you will pay full attention to situation that the plastic bags are still commonly used in some regions.
In my opinion, the above situation can be improved only when restrictions play their effective role. Here are some suggestions to achieve it. The government should further strengthen the supervision and control of production and circulation of plastic bags. What's more, all social sectors should show their strong support. The shops can offer small gifts or discount to the customers who bring their own bags. Designers can design beautiful cloth bags to attract shoppers to use them.
Since my own voice is too weak to be heard. I hope you can call on the public to reduce the use of the plastic bags
